Good Film Vault : Casablanca (1942)

By Tasha

Casablanca is one of the first "classic" films I fell in love with. I was urged to see it by my father and to this day, i'll watch it anytime it's on. It's the first film where we see Humphrey Bogart stray from his usual gangster character and play a romantic leading man and in my opinion, this role was crafted solely for him. This film has become an icon of classic Hollywood films. I can completely understand why it's consistently considered one of the greatest films of all time. Everything about it is so memorable, from the script to the scenes.

Set in the early days of WWII, Casablanca tells the story of rough and tumble Rick Blaine (played wonderfully by Humphrey Bogart), an American expatriate who is living in Morocco. Rick owns a cafe, where vegabonds, criminals, Natzi's, refugee's and people of that sort mingle.

One of these crooks who frequents Rick's cafe is Ungarte who comes to Rick with two letters of transit which he somehow obtained. These letters are priceless as they will allow any two people the freedom to travel around German-occupied Europe and thus reach the United States, if need be. Ungarte is killed and he leaves the transit papers in Rick's possession.

Unbeknownst to Rick, Ungarte had planned to sell the letters to Ilasa Lund (the stunning Ingred Bergman) and her husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) , who is wanted by the Nazis. Rick and Ilsa had a torrid love affair in the past but she left him for Victor. Somehow, through fate she stumbles back into Rick's life under the most horrible of circumstances. Does Rick help her to escape, only to live a life without him?

Despite the fact that the film is old and thus in black in white, it's an absolute masterpiece. It's a gut-wrenching love story filled with action and suspense. It completely keeps your attention from start to finish.

IMBD Score: 8.8/10 My Score: 9/10
